Aon Pilot Assessments (cut-e): modules, airlines and how to prepare
By the PilotinQ editorial teamUpdated 12 Oct 2026
SHORT ANSWER

Aon Pilot Assessments, formerly known as cut-e, are browser-based tests that airlines and flight academies send as an online link. Aptitude and logic modules take 2 to 20 minutes each, and the ADEPT-15 workstyle questionnaire about 30 minutes. Together they cover reasoning, memory, concentration and pilot skills such as hand-eye coordination and multitasking. You usually have several days to finish. Jet2, Delta and BAA Training use Aon, as do Airline Flight Academy's B737 cadet programme for Ryanair and AFTA's ASL Airlines Ireland mentored programme. Checked 25 October 2026.58

Scoring and retakes

Aon states that performance tests usually add points for each correct answer and deduct points for each incorrect one, and that the final result is calculated at the end. Not finishing every question in the time is normal, but guessing carelessly lowers the score, so answer quickly and carefully. Personality questionnaires such as ADEPT-15 have no right or wrong answers; they check whether your profile suits the role. You hear about the outcome and next steps from the employer that invited you. Retests are common: if you reach an interview day you may be asked to repeat a module from the online assessment, which is how results are cross-checked, and Jet2 states that some online results are validated under supervised conditions later. If a test blocks, for example after a browser crash, contact the company that invited you so it can be unblocked. Aon recommends that employers delete data after a period and states that as a rule data is deleted after 12 months.1

Is cut-e the same as Aon?

Yes. cut-e was a Hamburg company founded in 2002 that built online ability tests, questionnaires and gamified assessments. Aon announced its acquisition on 4 May 2017, and Aon's assessment business is now described as formerly cut-e. Test names such as scales, gridChallenge and switchChallenge still carry the cut-e heritage, which is why candidates and airlines still say cut-e when they mean an Aon test.1

Not only for pilots

Aon sells ability tests, personality questionnaires, job-specific knowledge tests, gamified situational judgment tests and video interviews to employers across many sectors, so the same link style turns up in non-aviation hiring. Which tests you receive depends on the employer and the position. The pilot-specific batteries, such as the nine modules in the Jet2 process, are assembled for cockpit roles, while the general reasoning modules in the table above are the building blocks employers can combine.

How an Aon test works

Every test opens with a short introduction, an interactive explanation and example exercises, and none of these stages is timed. Once the real test begins you cannot pause it, and it ends when the clock runs out. You can usually pick the order of the tests and take breaks between them, and the total time you take over the whole set is not monitored or scored. Most candidates face no more than five tests. Your invitation states the deadline: Jet2 gave 4 days for the task-based assessment and 4 days for the Aon modules.

What the three groups of tests measure

Ability tests such as Numerical Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Working Memory and Concentration measure how quickly and accurately you process information. Logic tests such as Inductive and Deductive Reasoning measure how well you spot rules and apply them. The ADEPT-15 questionnaire measures work-related behaviour through 100 statements. For pilots, employers add skill modules, as Jet2 does with hand-eye co-ordination, sense of direction, multitasking, monitoring, reaction speed and applied numeracy. These pilot modules take about 5 to 10 minutes each and need no pilot knowledge.14

Devices and set-up

Use a PC or laptop with an up-to-date browser and a stable connection. Almost every test also runs on phones and tablets, but Aon highly recommends a computer. A calculator or pen and paper helps for some tests and the introduction says when. Work in a quiet place, switch your phone off and tell the people around you that you cannot be disturbed. Video interviews need a camera and microphone, and Apple mobile devices may require an app download.1

What happens after the assessment

The employer contacts you about results and next steps. Each test has a feedback report, which the employer may share with you. If you need an adjustment such as extra time for dyslexia or a screen magnifier, contact the employer or the test provider before you start; Aon assesses requests case by case. Do the tests yourself: having someone else complete your assessment leads to immediate exclusion, and cheating comes to light at the latest during a retest on an interview day.1

How to prepare

Aon publishes screencast videos and downloadable PDF practice tasks with solutions for several modules, including switchChallenge, scales numerical, scales verbal, scales ix and scales clx. Work through those first, then use the cut-e (Aon) practice page: seven tests in the style of cut-e (Spatial orientation, Grid challenge, Monitoring, Switch challenge, Multitasking, Hand-eye coordination, Listening and remembering) and multiple-choice sets in numerical, verbal and abstract reasoning, number series, mathematics and physics. Practise under a timer so the format costs you no time on the day, and keep a rhythm that is quick without being careless.

Regulatory background

EASA.CAT.GEN.MPA.175 has been in effect since 14 February 2021 and requires airlines to ensure flight crew have undergone a psychological assessment before line flying. The assessment covers cognitive abilities, personality traits, operational and professional competencies and social competences. Employers meet the cognitive and personality parts with batteries such as Aon's.211

What you get with the Pilot Pass

The cut-e (Aon) practice page offers seven tests in the style of cut-e: Spatial orientation, Grid challenge, Monitoring, Switch challenge, Multitasking, Hand-eye coordination and Listening and remembering, plus multiple-choice practice in numerical, verbal and abstract reasoning, number series, mathematics and physics. Pilot Pass: all questions in study, test and exam mode, as often as you like for the length of your Pass; the interactive aptitude tests are part of the Pass. A free account gets up to 8 free 10-question sets a week.

Frequently asked questions

Is cut-e the same as Aon?

Yes. Aon acquired cut-e in 2017 and the business is now Aon's Assessment Solutions, formerly cut-e. A cut-e test and an Aon test belong to the same family.13

How long is an Aon pilot assessment?

Most single tests take under 15 minutes and you usually take no more than five. The Jet2 pilot modules take about 5 to 10 minutes each, while the BAA Training assessment is a 3.5 hour sitting.145

How much does the Aon test cost for pilots?

It depends on who invites you. Airline Flight Academy's B737 cadet programme for Ryanair charges EUR 60, paid to Aon, for its pre-assessment, and AFTA's ASL Airlines Ireland mentored programme charges EUR 79 for the online cut-e assessment.89

Can I retake an Aon test?

You cannot pause or restart a test once it starts. Retakes are set by the employer, and you may be asked to repeat a module on an interview day. If a test blocks after a technical problem, ask the employer to unblock it.1

What happens if I do not finish all the questions?

That is normal. Aon says it is normal not to finish every question in the time, and that wrong answers generally lower your score, so work quickly but carefully.1

Can I do the Aon test on my phone?

Most tests run on phones and tablets, but Aon highly recommends a PC or laptop with an up-to-date browser and a stable connection.1

Does the Aon pilot assessment need a joystick?

Aon says you generally need only a device with a browser, and it highly recommends a PC or laptop. For the pilot modules in your own process, such as hand-eye co-ordination at Jet2, your invitation lists what is tested.1

Can someone help me with the online test?

No. Aon says having someone else complete your assessment leads to immediate exclusion, and Jet2 validates some online results under supervised conditions later.1

How long does Aon keep my results?

As a rule data in Aon's systems is deleted after 12 months, and you can ask the company to delete it earlier.1
