Overview
Reasoning tests measure your ability to think logically, recognise patterns and draw conclusions. They appear in almost every pilot assessment, as part of pre-selection, the cognitive assessment or the online assessment. Why reasoning tests in a pilot assessment? As a pilot you have to process information quickly, make logical decisions and recognise patterns in complex situations.
In detail (1)
Reasoning tests measure these core skills in a standardised setting. The 6 types of reasoning test Type What it tests Example Logical reasoning Syllogisms, drawing conclusions "All pilots are people. Jan is a pilot. So..." Verbal reasoning Reading comprehension, conclusions from text Read a passage, answer questions Numerical reasoning Number series, tables, graphs 2, 5, 11, 23, ? (answer: 47) Abstract reasoning Recognising patterns in figures Which figure comes next in the series?
In detail (2)
Spatial awareness 3D visualisation, rotation Cube folding, mirror images Diagrammatic Processes, flowcharts, rules Follow the diagram and determine the output Tips per type Logical: Learn the rules of syllogisms. Draw Venn diagrams if it helps. Verbal: Read the question first, then the text. Look for key words.
In detail (3)
Numerical: Find the pattern: ×2, +3, ×2, +3. Practise number series daily. Abstract: Focus on one element at a time (shape, colour, position, rotation). Spatial: Practise cube folding exercises and mental rotation.
In detail (4)
Diagrammatic: Follow it step by step, do not rush.
