What it is

One source

An ATPL allows a pilot to serve as pilot-in-command in commercial air transport. A filed flight plan is the version submitted to an Air Traffic Services (ATS) unit, excluding any subsequent changes.1 NOTAMs provide warnings about temporary changes and conditions, appearing as NOTAMN for new information, NOTAMR to replace previous information, and NOTAMC to cancel previous information.1

Applicants for an EASA ATPL must be at least 21 years old and have completed a minimum of 1,500 hours of flight time in aeroplanes.2 This flight time must include at least 500 hours in multi-pilot operations.2 Additionally, 250 hours must be as Pilot in Command (PIC), or 500 hours as PIC under supervision, or 250 hours including at least 70 hours as PIC and the remainder as PIC under supervision.2 The flight time also requires 200 hours of cross-country flight time, with at least 100 hours as PIC or PIC under supervision.2 Furthermore, 75 hours of instrument time are needed, of which a maximum of 30 hours can be instrument ground time.2 For an EASA ATPL, 100 hours of night flight as PIC or co-pilot are required.2 Up to 100 hours of the total flight time for an EASA ATPL can be completed in a Flight Simulation Training Device (FSTD), with a maximum of 25 hours of FSTD time in a Flight Navigation and Procedures Trainer (FNPT).3

Context and background

Primary source

The ATPL exam covers rules for filing and amending flight plans, such as the three-hour deadline before EOBT for ATFM and informing the appropriate ATS unit within thirty minutes of landing elsewhere.1 The EASA fuel scheme includes taxi fuel, trip fuel, contingency fuel, alternate fuel, final reserve, and, where applicable, additional and extra fuel.1 A Part MED Class 1 Medical Certificate is required for a UK CAA ATPL.4 An ATPL holder's current knowledge supports a commercial pilot's routine tasks, particularly for performance computations, meteorological assessments, and urgent protocols.
