What pay does Emirates publish for its pilots?
In October 2026, Emirates lists a tax-free total package for a First Officer of AED 900,000 a year, which includes an annual take home cash of AED 385,000 made up of annualised basic salary and flying pay. The monthly take home cash for this rank is AED 32,100, covering monthly basic pay and 85 hours of flying pay. First Officers with at least 4,000 hours total flying time on jets over 20 tonnes, at least 2000 hours on multi-crew jets over 50 tonnes and ELP 5 or higher qualify for an enhanced package: AED 415,000 annual take home cash, AED 34,600 a month and AED 935,000 in total. The Accelerated Command route for experienced narrow-body captains carries an annual take home cash of AED 445,000, AED 37,100 a month and a total package of AED 970,000. A Direct Entry Captain receives AED 575,000 a year in take home cash, AED 48,000 a month and a total package of AED 1,185,000. Emirates bases the total package on an employee with a spouse and 2 eligible children, and counts take home cash, schooling, medical cover, insurance, annual leave tickets, housing, transport and its Provident scheme contribution. Gulf News set out the same figures in August 2026 when Emirates launched a recruitment roadshow for experienced pilots.1235
What else is in the package?
Emirates states that pilot salaries are tax free in Dubai and advises pilots to check the tax rules of their home country. Pilots are housed free of charge in a villa with three or four bedrooms in a gated community, including utilities, valued at AED 225,000 for a First Officer and AED 290,000 for a Direct Entry Captain. Pilots who buy their own property receive an accommodation allowance instead. The role pages list an education allowance of AED 52,250 a year for primary school and AED 79,750 for secondary school, for up to 3 children aged 4 to 19. The frequently asked questions on the same careers site give lower ceilings of up to AED 42,750 and AED 65,250 per child per year. After six months, pilots join the Provident Fund: the employee pays in 5% of basic monthly salary, and Emirates pays 12% during the first ten years and 15% after 10 years. On leaving, pilots receive their own contributions plus either the employer's share of the Provident Fund or the End of Service Benefit, whichever is higher, with the full employer's share vesting after five years. If the company meets its profit target, staff receive a profit share in May, which has ranged from two to 24 weeks of basic salary. Gulf News reported in May 2026 that Emirates Group staff would receive a 20-week salary bonus for the 2025-26 financial year. Expatriate pilots are covered by an Exchange Rate Protection scheme that protects 50% of net basic salary each month, except for the USA as the dirham is tied to the dollar.1246
How quickly can you move up to captain?
The careers site lists entry points of 2,000 hours for a First Officer, 5,000 hours for Accelerated Command and 7,000 hours for a Direct Entry Captain. To upgrade to captain, Emirates currently asks for at least 6,000 hours total time, at least 2,000 hours in an operating seat on the Emirates type concerned, at least 6 completed EBT modules, and a minimum age of 30 to start the command course.4
What about the training bond, rosters and leave?
Emirates applies a training bond of USD 42,000 to First Officers and Captains on the passenger fleet, running for 42 months. Type conversion takes 40 to 55 days on the B777 and 45 to 55 days on the A380. Rostering uses rotating bid groups, with each group getting top bidding priority every five months, and a 35-day reserve month roughly every 10 months. Sectors range from 50 minutes to 17 hours, layovers usually last 24 to 72 hours, and pilots are away from base for no more than nine days. Pilots receive 42 days of leave a year and a confirmed annual leave ticket for themselves and their dependants. All Emirates pilots are based in Dubai, and the airline does not offer a commuting option.4
