What does Ethiopian Airlines offer expat captains?

The airline recruits expat captains for the A350, the Boeing 777/787 and the Boeing 737. Its vacancies list a competitive salary plus flying, per diem and overtime allowances, a housing allowance, free transport, a long-term contract, paid annual leave, medical and personal accident insurance, an annual bonus and business class ticket benefits. No amounts are given. Screening takes place every week, Monday to Friday, in Addis Ababa and needs two days, with travel and hotel provided.1

What experience does Ethiopian Airlines ask for?

Expat captains must be no older than 60 and have at least 3500 hours on jets, 2500 hours as pilot in command on jets and more than 500 hours in command on the type. They need a JAA, FAA or ICAO airline transport pilot licence, a current type rating, a Class 1 medical and ICAO English level 4 or above.1

Is there any public figure on pilot pay?

Only indirectly: in 2019 Capital Ethiopia reported that the airline used the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia for deposits of over 80 million birr every month for its 1,200 pilots. The Ethiopian Airline Pilots Association, then with about 700 members, had just agreed a home and car loan deal with a private bank, and one captain said most pilots lived in rented housing.2

Can you train with the airline itself?

The group's Ethiopian Aviation University runs a commercial pilot licence course lasting 1 year and 3 months. Applicants must be at least 18, taller than 1.62 metres and have English at level IV.3
